University Experience Comparison Assignment
(Women Role & International things)

             My partner's name is Ruth and she graduated from Penn State. I don't know her exact age but I think she is a student who graduated Penn State during the 1940s. Her major was education and after graduation, she taught ESL students. During the conversation, we talked about the importance of a teacher to students and talked about her memories in the past. She had a big house when she became a teacher, and therefore, she brought international students to her house and had activities like cooking and talking. She said that she learned how to cook Asian foods through that experience. Also she talked about women in the 1940s. Apparently, her father was not pleased about her attending a university. I was really surprised that woman rarely attended universities at that time period. I knew about that fact vaguely but after talking with Ruth, I was able to know about it more clearly.
             After the conversation, I looked over the activates or clubs students joined from the 1957 yearbook. When I looked at the yearbook, I found out that most of the women attended college had decided to major in education. More than half of those who were in education were female. I also found out that there were lots of activities that were very helpful for their education major. One of the students who were in the College of Education, Nancy Ann Scholl, had scrolls; education student council; campus party; leadership training committee; all-university secretariat; sophomore class advisory board; junior class advisory board (Year Book, 1957).
            Moreover, I found some issues from the Collegian newspaper in the past. From Daily Collegian, 1964 page 2, there was an advertisement about "Overseas Opportunities" which is an international voluntary service. This gave foreign students the opportunity to earn their own allowances with salary. However, only men in the B.S degree and had great motivation were allowed to apply (International Voluntary service, Inc, 1964). After looking at the 1964 Collegian, I additionally researched about the women's role in Penn State University. From the 1966 Daily Collegian, page 3 there was an article titled "Harris Discusses Changing Role of University Woman." This article was a great source describing the increase of women's role and influences at the university. According to the passages, "she went on to discuss the nature of the Penn State Women, the apartment ruling, male "operators" and the pressures placed upon college women in modern society". The ratio between men and women in Penn State at that time was 2.5 to 1. However, it was clear that women were trying to receive more opportunities and that the university itself was trying to give more chances to women. For example, the dean of women gave a public speech asking the university to give more women the chance of getting a clear career rather than giving them the "dating games" (Helsel, C. Harris, 1966).
             While, I read this article, I was quite surprised because that was one of the first starting points for women gaining power in society. Fortunately, many women have been placed in higher positions today. From the LA Vie 2000, I could easily see that female students have become more active in clubs (Year Book, 2000).

Yesterday, I read chapter 6. There was story about the boy problem between Kaitlyn and Hazel. That boy was Augustus Waters and also Kaitlyn knew about him. I thought that was fun I think every girls are talking with their friends who have a boy problem. Also the story of Caroline Mathers who died by brain cancer. I felt sorry to them who got cancer again.

1. This trip was so good to me. I was really happy to meet grandmothers and grandfathers in there. They were so nice and she was really happy to introduce Foxdale to me.

2. I enjoyed to look around the Foxdale and I was really happy to go outside of the Bucky Building!! And there has no challenging to me. I feel really comfortable and happy.

3. I think these activities are really helpful to IECP students who are trying to learn English. And knowing about the American culture.

Yesterday, I read chapter 5. That was about Isaac's surgery and that was successful but he never have his eye anymore. Also Hazel got an response from the author about the Hazel's questions.

"That's part of what I like about the book in some says. It portrays death truthfully. You die in the middle of your life, in the middle of sentence. But I do--God, I do really want to know what happens to everyone else. That's what I asked him in my letters. But he, yeah, he never answers." (page 67)

While I was reading this book, chapter 5, I also thought about every people have their own favorite books and they really want to read over and over. However, I think I don't have any favorite book. Actually I read "Odyssey" before during the one of the class in high school but I never read about that book again. I think I really don't have concentration therefore, I couldn't read again. However, Hazel the main character of this book, she explains why she want to contact the writer of the book "An Imperial Affliction."  When I think about my past, I really don't like to read a book and I really don't care about the contents in books. However, I was quite surprised that she want to know the story and curious that story so she sent an email to the writer. And also I thought I really want to find a great book which is touching my heart so that I cannot forget that story of book.

Today I finished chapter 4.

In the chapter 4, Hazel explains a book An Imperial Affliction briefly at the beginning chapter 4 toward to the middle of chapter 4 . The main character of this book is a girl, Anna who has a blood cancer and her mother and she fall in love with a Dutch man. However she said, a book, An Imperial Affliction ends without conclusion. That''s why Hazel has lots of questions about the characters in that book, I think. Also, Hazel said, this book is her favorite book and she read a lot like million times before; which is I would never did that. Therefore, I had a question about my favorite book also, I think every person has their own favorite book even more than one. Moreover, I also think about how the conclusion of the story is important to readers. I think depend on the conclusion of the story could change the whole story. It might gives lingering imagery or lead the whole story as a reverse story. Also I was surprised that Hazel reads a book with character who has cancer; it might not important to Hazel, but if I have a cancer, I would avoid to read about any other books with cancer thingy. Because it might gives little bit depress mood to me.

Chapter 3 - Chapter 4

     I was impressed on that every children who have cancer, treated differently from normal children. At the beginning of this story, Hazel's mother was really excited on Hazel's thirty-third half birthday which is not happening to normal healthy children. Therefore, they are becoming "Otherness" by having cancer. That fact is quite depressed to me.
   Also on this chapter explains about the relationship between a children who has cancer and who hasn't. Hazel explained the relationship between her and Kaitlyn is "unbridgeable distance" which is cannot be closer because of the cancer barrier. Moreover, a little girl who asked about the tubes in Hazel's nose can be also explain that Hazel is different than the others.
   Therefore, I think she wants to avoid and take a rest from getting stress that she is a cancer patient some moments that she is a cancer patient with reading a book "The Price of Dawn, called Midnight Dawn. "
